Belize National rugby seven-team to debut at regional qualifier

By Aaron Humes: Belize is set to make its international rugby-seven debut at next month’s Fireminds Rugby Americas North Rugby Sevens in Turks and Caicos, a qualifier for the 2022 World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series.

Having just featured in back-to-back tournaments in the World Series over the last two weekends in Vancouver and Edmonton, Jamaica and Mexico – who will headline Pool A and Pool B respectively – enter the tournament as favorites to meet in the Cup Final on day two. Pool A is joined by Dominican Republic and the British Virgin Islands, while Pool B will see the hosts Turks and Caicos Islands alongside Barbados. Pool C sees Bermuda, Guyana, Curacao and Belize, who are set to make their international sevens debut, set to square off on day one.

The top two teams in each pool will go forward into the Cup Competition on Day 2 and the remaining 4 teams will play a round-robin competition.

This will be the very first time Belize’s national team, which is comprised of players from teams in Belize City, Orange Walk and Belmopan, has participated in a World Rugby tournament and marks the first step on the road to qualifying for future international sevens competitions.
