Hurricane Sam, now a Category 4, expected to remain major hurricane for several days

Posted: Monday, September 27, 2021. 10:39 am CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Hurricane Sam, now churning winds of 130 miles per hour, is a Category 4 storm, and is expected to remain a major hurricane for several days, said the United States Hurricane Center (NHC) in its 6 am advisory.

The NHC said Hunter aircraft will investigate Sam later today.

Sam is located 800 miles east southeast of the northern Leeward Islands. The NHC said it is moving to the northwest at 8 miles per hour and is expected to continue in this path for the next several days. By Thursday, Sam should increase its forward speed.

Sam is considered a small hurricane as it remains compact with hurricane-force winds extending 30 from the center. Tropical force winds extend up to 105 miles.

The NHC said swells produced by Sam should reach the Lesser Antilles today and should affect the islands during the next several days. Islanders are advised to look out for these swells as they could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

The NHC advises that the population in the Lesser Antilles should consult products from their local weather offices.
