By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño and Foreign Affairs Minister Eamon Courtenay personally delivered thanks for Belize to Indian counterpart S Jaishankar on the South Asian country’s generous donation of COVID-19 vaccines as part of its Vaccine Maitri initiative.
Belize’s entourage and their Indian counterpart met at the celebrations of Mexico’s 200th anniversary of attaining Independence on Monday.
India began the initiative in January but had to pause it after a spike of cases and deaths in their own country. The Times of India reports that last week, Minister of Health and Family Welfare Mansukh Mandaviya announced that in the fourth quarter this year, the Government of India will resume the project.
The first COVID-19 vaccines in Belize came from the Indians – via Barbados for 1,000 doses and then a further batch in March, before the COVAX initiative and others. It was used primarily in the first phases of the national vaccination drive, inoculating health care workers and elderly and health-compromised persons.
