By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “It is a privilege to have been chosen by our bilateral partner President of Mexico as the only Head of State to attend Mexico’s Independence Consummation Ceremony,” said Prime Minister John Briceño who is heading a delegation of government ministers and high-ranking officials in a one-week State Visit to Mexico.

“Stronger ties with Mexico can be beneficial for expanded trade and investment opportunities in Belize from that northern neighbor.”

Prime Minister Briceño was invited to and participated in the historic celebration consummation of Mexico’s independence from Spain last night at El Zócalo in Mexico City.

Annually on September 27, the Entrance to Mexico City by the Army of the Three Guarantees is enacted. Mexico’s independence started on September 16, 1810, but the independence war with Spain lasted ten years before the final declaration, which Mexicans call the consummation of their independence came on September 27, 1821.

A video message from US president Joe Biden, in which he referred to Mexico as the United States’ closest neighbour was played during the ceremony.

Russian astronauts in space also saluted Mexico on their Independence celebration.
