By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Ministry of Infrastructure, Development and Housing (MIDH) has started the construction of starter homes throughout the country according to reports from the Ministry itself and Prime Minister John Briceño.
The MIDH is to construct 150 single bedroom homes countrywide in the first phase for first-time homeowners said the Prime Minister.
According to the MIDH, the homes cost between $30,000 to $35,000 and the recipients will be paying $25 weekly for them, approximately $110 monthly.
“Our planned initial roll out of 150 starter homes for first-time homeowners, especially single moms has commenced,” said Prime Minister Briceño on a social media post.
“Already 22 homes are under construction in Cayo, Dangriga, Cow Pen Village and in Belize City.”
The Prime Minister also said the construction of 30 more homes for single parents would also begin this month.
He also said that meanwhile some of the dilapidated community houses in Belize City are undergoing much-needed repairs.
The MIDH said the starter homes are in fulfillment of the Government’s commitment that Belizeans will have access to affordable and adequate housing.
“Our government works for the development of our people, and we are determined to make the lives of all Belizeans better,” the Prime Minister said.
“We have demonstrated and will continue to show what is possible when we concentrate our collective efforts on making sure that we are there for the people, ensuring that the ordinary man and woman can live respectably in this beautiful Jewel of ours.”
In March, the MIDH, led by Minister Julius Espat, asked “our people for patience” saying that the Government was serious about “serving our people and serious about delivering on planBelize.”
“These programs directly touch the lives of our most vulnerable citizens,” Prime Minister Briceño noted.
