PUP marks 71st anniversary, reaches out to women

By Aaron Humes: The People’s United Party, formed from the People’s Committee on this day in 1950, has arguably never ridden higher in its history.

That history, of course, includes decades of dominance under Rt Hon George Price, leading the nation to Independence in 1981, and after a tug of war in the 1990s with the United Democratic Party, a return under Said Musa.

After his and the party’s downfall in 2008, first John Briceno and then Francis Fonseca led the party through internal turmoil before last year’s triumph at the polls.

The well-wishes have poured in on social media but the only major event planned is the launch of the United Women’s Group (UWG) online portal, reaching out to women whether of party stripe or not.

Nearly all of the party’s key leaders are away at the moment but they join all Blue supporters in wishing their party a happy anniversary.
