By Aaron Humes: While some individual countries are starting to recede, the region of the Americas as a whole has reported more new COVID-19 infections and related deaths than any other region in the preceding week, according to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
Director, Dr. Carissa Etienne said at a briefing on Wednesday that the Americas last week reported nearly 1.5 million new COVID infections and more than 26,000 COVID-related deaths.
The United States, still leading the world in total infections and deaths, has seen a decline in cases, but a rise in the number of deaths. Canada has seen both rise; however, Mexico has reported a decrease in transmission, according to Dr. Etienne.
Most small islands of the Caribbean are experiencing increases in cases, with hospitals in Saint Lucia reporting staff and oxygen shortages as hospitalizations continue to rise.
In many countries and territories, “burnout among health care workers remains a concern as hospitals are overburdened with COVID patients,” Dr. Etienne said.
