Caribbean Week of Agriculture opens on Monday, October 4, under the theme ‘Transforming our Food Systems’

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Caribbean Week of Agriculture which opens on Monday, October 4, 2021, under the theme ‘Transforming our Food Systems’ will feature a week of virtual activities.

“Sector participants are anticipating an impactful event that will showcase opportunities for practical and technology-oriented solutions to tackle food security,” said CARICOM TODAY.

“They are also confident that strategic partnerships will be forged as part of actions towards the transformation that is required in the agriculture sector as the Region navigates the COVID-19 environment.”

The Caribbean Week of Agriculture will be hosted by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), and the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI).

These main main partners along with other regional and international agencies will be hosting webinars on technical and other agricultural topics throughout the week.

CARICOM also said the Boards of Directors/Governors of several of those regional agricultural organisations will be holding meetings, including a Special Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED).

The Caribbean Week of Agriculture will feature a Virtual Marketplace where more than 50 exhibitors showcase their products and services in agri-business, including primary production, manufacturing, agro-tourism, agricultural technology, agricultural education, and agricultural retail and distribution.

CARICOM TODAY said the virtual event will feature more than 30 activities and more than 100 speakers.

Dr. Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana and Lead head of Government with responsibility for Agriculture in the CARICOM Quasi Cabinet, will deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony on Monday at 9 am.
