BREAKING: Suspect in murder of Dwayne Gabourel named, to be remanded

Posted: Friday, October 1, 2021. 4:25 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Today, Police have arrested and charged Dane Khalil Gillett, 24, an electrician of Belize City for the murder of Dwayne Gabourel, 15, last Saturday.

Someone shot Gabourel from behind as he was buying in a neighborhood grocery store not far from his home; the St. John’s College student died two days later.

Gillett was to have been arraigned in Magistrates Court this afternoon but it has been delayed due to his testing positive for COVID-19.

This afternoon Commissioner of Police Chester Williams told us Gillett appeared to be asymptomatic, was showing no symptoms of COVID-19, and was in good health otherwise.

As of this writing, he is isolated in a police detention cell and later on will be transferred to the Central Prison at Hattieville on a commitment warrant. Once there he will be isolated as long as it takes for him to recover from the virus. He will be formally arraigned in court thereafter.
