By Ruben Morales Iglesias: Today, October 1st, is being observed as International Day of Older Persons under the theme “Digital Equity For All Ages”.
The National Council on Ageing (NCA) said the theme establishes “the need for access and meaningful participation of older persons in the digital world”.
“The international inclusion of all the persons and closing of the digital divide has always been a great concern, but COVID-19 has shown a harsh light on existing inequities, further demonstrating the need for action to be taken towards digital equity for all persons,” said the NCA.
The NCA said that their response to this global concern is organizing a series of initiatives that ensure that older persons in Belize can fully participate in our society’s democracy and economy. The NCA said some of the activities include “a series of online digital skills training that teach participants how to utilize their devices, to navigate safely online, complete day-to-day tasks, and remain socially engaged”.
The NCA said it encourages younger people to recognize the efforts and contributions of older people.
“We want to encourage you to take a moment to celebrate the older person within your home, offices, and community for their invaluable contributions to their families and the overall development of our country. Mentoring, volunteering, being caregivers in the home, providing technical experience in paid work and leading successful businesses are just some of the ways older people continue to build Belize,” said the NCA.
The NCA closed its press release quoting South African hero Nelson Mandela: “A society that does not value its older people denies its roots and endangers its future. Let us strive to enhance their capacity to support themselves for as long as possible and, what they cannot do so anymore, to care for them.”
