Body of missing Jerry Espat, shot at sea, found

By Aaron Humes: Police have confirmed the discovery of the body of Jerry Espat, 25, of San Pedrito area, San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, in some mangroves behind the lagoon near the sea this morning.

The body carried multiple gunshot wounds according to reports.

One person has been detained and three others are soughy in the town’s first homicide for 2021.

An official police report details that the incident took place at Cangrejo Caye, a mile southeast of Ambergris Caye. Just before 10 a.m., fishermen Luis Enrique Santoya, Ricardo Anthony Espat, Kirian Espat, and Jerry Espat, were diving for conch as that season re-opened on Friday.

The men said they were ambushed by a trio aboard a red boat and another group on a light blue boat who faced off with Kirian Espat and Jerry Espat, who were diving in the waters.

Luis Enrique Santoya, who was on their boat, managed to pick up Ricardo Espat who was in the waters closest to him and was shot to the left lower knee by one of the assailants in the red boat. He then sped off and headed in a northerly direction towards San Pedro Town, pursued by the shooter and his accomplices.

The other group attacked Jerry Espat and Kirian Espat before fleeing. Kirian later managed to get assistance to the mainland and later went for assistance to locate his brother Jerry Espat.

Police investigations continue.
