Conch season now open, Fisheries Department reminds of conch regulations

Posted: Monday, October 4, 2021. 6:12 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The 2021-22 conch season opened on Friday, October 1, and will remain open for nine months until June 30, 2022.

“The Queen Conch remains Belize’s second most important commercial fishery being significantly important to the livelihoods of many coastal residents,” said the Belize Fisheries Department.

Belizeans and visitors alike will be able to enjoy this delicacy, but its fishing is not a free for all. There are regulations that control its fishing and selling. After all, the regulations are there to ensure that we always have conch.

The Fisheries Department took the opportunity to remind us all, what these are.

“As we enjoy this exquisite delicacy let’s keep in mind the following regulations:

1. Shell length should exceed 7 inches;

2. Market Clean and fillet weight should exceed 3 and 2.75 ounces respectively;

3. No person or establishment shall buy, sell or have in possession diced conch meat other than market clean conch,” said the Belize Fisheries Department.

The Fisheries Department called on Belizeans to report any illegal activities to 501- 224-4552, Crime Stoppers at 0-800-922-TIPS(8477) or to [email protected].
