By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As the China-Taiwan situation escalated over recent days, United States President Joe Biden said on Tuesday that Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to abide by the Taiwan agreement.

Under the Taiwan agreement, the United States recognizes China rather than Taiwan on the expectation that the future of Taiwan will be decided by peaceful means, said a Reuters report.

“I’ve spoken with Xi about Taiwan. We agree … we’ll abide by the Taiwan agreement…We made it clear that I don’t think he should be doing anything other than abiding by the agreement,” said Biden.

China has not ruled out the possible use of force to gain annex Taiwan.

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory saying there is only one China. In 1949, when the Communist Party took over China during its civil war, the up-to-then ruling Chinese government retreated to the island of Taiwan claiming to be independent of mainland China. China opposes Taiwan’s independence despite having trade and investment ties.

From last Friday to Monday, Taiwan said close to 150 Chinese air force aircraft made incursions into its air space.

The show of force by China was condemned by the United States and Taiwan.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-Wen said Таіwаn is not looking for mіlіtаrу соnfrоntаtіоn, аnd wаntѕ реасеful, ѕtаblе, рrеdісtаblе, аnd mutuаllу bеnеfісіаl соехіѕtеnсе wіth іtѕ nеіghbоurѕ, but said Taiwan would defend itself.
