By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Taiwan Ambassador David Kuan-Chou Chien visited Orange Walk on Wednesday and met with Mayor Ladrick Sheppard to celebrate Taiwan National Day.

During his visit, Ambassador Chien handed Mayor Sheppard, 300 gift packages on the occasion of the 110th “Double Ten” National Day of Taiwan which comes up on Sunday, October 10. Ambassador Chien also made a cash donation for a back-to-school initiative in Orange Walk.

“In a collaboration with the Orange Walk Town Council, the Embassy successfully shared our joy and happiness with residents of the Sugar City by distributing goodwill bags containing exquisite Taiwanese style pastries,” said the Embassy of Taiwan on social media.

The Ambassador was accompanied by other officials of the Taiwan Embassy.

Chien said that as Taiwan celebrates its national day, he wanted to share its joy with the people of Orange Walk.

“We also extend our heartfelt appreciation to all the people of Belize for your unwavering staunch support and friendship to my country, Taiwan,” said Ambassador Chien.

The Ambassador said he knows the people in Orange Walk and Belize have suffered tremendously because of the pandemic. He added that we have to work together to contain the spread of the pandemic.

“Taiwan is Belize’s trustworthy ally and a reliable partner in national development. Both of us share the common values of democracy, freedom, and human rights,” said Ambassador Chien.

Mayor Sheppard thanked the Ambassador for recognizing the good relations between Belize and Taiwan.

“This relation between both countries can benefit all,” Sheppard said while thanking Taiwan for the scholarships to Belizean students, including several from Orange Walk.

Sheppard also thanked the Taiwanese Government for assisting with the construction of a National Heroes Monument in Orange Walk.

Sheppard said the Taiwan gift packages would be distributed to frontline workers.

On Taiwan National Day, on Sunday, October 10, the Taiwan National Flag will be flown along with the Belize National Flag at the Flag Monument at Orange Walk’s Central Park.
