By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Belize calls on the international community to ensure peace and security in the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific region,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade on Twitter.

“We urge all stakeholders to use every possible means to ensure the peaceful resolution of cross-Strait issues.”

“Belize stands in solidarity with Taiwan.”

Belize’s call comes at a time of heightened tension in the area with China making air incursions into Taiwan’s airspace.

China claims Taiwan and has not ruled out the possible use of force to gain annex Taiwan.

On Tuesday, United States President Joe Biden said he spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping who agreed to abide by the Taiwan agreement.

“I’ve spoken with Xi about Taiwan. We agree … we’ll abide by the Taiwan agreement…We made it clear that I don’t think he should be doing anything other than abiding by the agreement,” said Biden.

Under the Taiwan agreement, the United States recognizes China rather than Taiwan on the expectation that the future of Taiwan will be decided by peaceful means said a Reuters report.

China claims Taiwan as part of its territory saying there is only one China. In 1949, when the Communist Party took over China during its civil war, the up-to-then ruling Chinese government retreated to the island of Taiwan claiming to be independent of mainland China. China opposes Taiwan’s independence despite having trade and investment ties.

Taiwan President Tsai Ing-Wen said Таіwаn is not looking for mіlіtаrу соnfrоntаtіоn, аnd wаntѕ реасеful, ѕtаblе, рrеdісtаblе, аnd mutuаllу bеnеfісіаl соехіѕtеnсе wіth іtѕ nеіghbоurѕ, but said Taiwan would defend itself.
