By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition Patrick Faber has issued congratulations on behalf of his United Democratic Party to the Government and People of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on the occasion of the 110th National Day also known as “Double Tenth.”
Faber said he missed being in Taipei in person for this year’s celebrations as he was a few years ago, due to COVID-19.
Nonetheless, he recognized Taiwanese support to Belize to fight the pandemic and the rich relationship the countries share.
Taiwan is arguably Belize’s greatest bilateral benefactor and recently extended the grace period of several loans come due to help our financial crunch, as well as donated key medical equipment and expertise in the fight against COVID-19.
Taiwan is under pressure from the People’s Republic of China which sees it as a breakaway province and has been making noises about bringing it under control. President Tsai Ing-Wen has responded by reasserting Taiwan’s effective independence from the Mainland.
