Belize Tourism Board provides enhanced health and safety training for San Pedro tour guides

Posted: Tuesday, October 12, 2021. 8:54 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: In the age of COVID-19, Belize’s suddenly battered tourism industry is fighting its way back, led by the tour guides who show the wonders of the Jewel to visitors and Belizeans alike.

In one of its strongest areas, Ambergris Caye, guides were given guidance on how to conduct tours while following globally recommended COVID-19 Health & Safety Precautions, familiarized with the Tourism Gold Standard Protocols for Guides, and provided a forum to exchange views on how to keep both guides and guests safe.

The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) and San Pedro Tour Guide Association hosted 64 guides, both members of the latter organization and others, at the San Pedro Junior College.

Association President Billy Leslie told his colleagues, “COVID-19 is here to stay and as guides, we play a vital role in safeguarding our country when tourists visit. This training was well planned and well-executed. It reminded guides to constantly be on the alert and follow all the safety protocols such as mask-wearing, social distancing, and proper sanitization procedures. Our San Pedro Guides are an important part of rebuilding the economy so these opportunities to prepare them to stay safe are welcomed.”

The Board plans to reiterate the important role carried out by our tour guides in ensuring adherence to health and safety protocols by guests, and in providing a quality and memorable experience to our guests in further similar training sessions in our major tourism destinations countrywide in the upcoming weeks of 2021.
