Belize National Rugby Team leaves for Turks & Caicos Islands on Thursday for World Rugby tournament

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize National Rugby Team leaves for Turks & Caicos Islands on Thursday, October 14, to compete, for the very first time, in a World Rugby tournament.

The Fireminds Rugby Americas North Sevens 2021 will be played at the Meridian Fields in Providenciales, in Turks and Caicos on Saturday and Sunday, October 16-17. A tournament is a qualification event for the 2022 World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series.

The Belize National Rugby Team is comprised of Aubrey Coc, Andre Herrera, Dayton Warrior, Edrick Matus, Luis Cunil, Orlando Castillo, Raheem Cummings, Gustavo Lopez, Abimael Godoy, Enrique Castillo, Cristobal Valerio, and Ashword Sanchez. Tony Gillings is the Coach/Manager and Udielmar Briceño is the Assistant Coach.

“The event, which is taking place at Meridian Fields in Providenciales, marks the return of international rugby to the Caribbean for the time since the COVID-19 global pandemic began in 2020 and also acts as a qualifier for next year’s World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series,” according to Rugby Americas North.

Nine countries are participating in the tournament after the withdrawal of the Dominican Republic.

Belize is in Pool C and will play against Guyana and Bermuda.

Pool A – Jamaica, British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos
Pool B – Mexico, Barbados, Curaçao
Pool C – Guyana, Bermuda, Belize

During Day One on October 16, each team will play against the other two opponents in their group.

Belize will play against Guyana at 10:00 am and against Bermuda at 2:15 pm.

The top two teams in each group advance to the Cup competition while the bottom teams from each pool will play for the Plate on day two.
