By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize is today, Thursday, exporting 166 head of cattle to Mexico.
“Cattle export going according to schedule this morning at Blue Creek … this morning 166 animals are being loaded on the semi-trailers to be taken to the Northern border and beyond, all under the SUKARNE banner,” posted the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) on Facebook on Thursday.
“The total number of head of cattle exported stands now at 1,642 for a value of close to 1.5 million Belize dollars,” said MAFSE.
On September 9, 195 head were exported from Shipyard. Belarmino Esquivel, Principal Agriculture Office and Livestock Director at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) said that shipment to Mexican multinational SuKarne consisted of 91,000 pounds live weight, worth $164,000 in foreign exchange to Belize’s economy.
In early July, 434 head of cattle with an approximate value of $500 thousand were exported to Mexican company SuKarne as well.
Before exportation the animals are approved by Mexico’s agricultural health authority, Senasica.
Esquivel said these initiatives are closely coordinated by the Cattle Industry Stakeholders Committee comprised of the Ministry of Agriculture as the Lead, representatives from the Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA), the Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA), and OIRSA.
