Civil Aviation says drones need its approval for commercial, recreational use

Posted: Friday, October 15, 2021. 10:15 am CST.

By Aaron Humes: The Belize Department of Civil Aviation says it continues to regulate the use of  Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, commonly referred to as drones.

Without the written consent of the Director of Civil Aviation, their use is officially prohibited.

According to the Department, it has learned that certain persons and organizations wish to commerce using drones to deliver packages and other items.

It wants to ensure that such a decision takes into consideration the possibility of damage to low-flying aircraft, buildings and other structures, and can cause injury to persons on the ground. In particular, Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations increase risk as loss of communication in some systems may result in a loss of control of the vehicle.

The Department says it does support innovation and the growth of new industry, but it needs to be properly regulated.

Therefore, all owners and operators of drones in Belize that do not have approval to operate a drone are encouraged to visit the department’s website at www.civilaviation.gov.bz to apply for permission. The Department of Civil Aviation also encourages any person wishing to use a drone for commercial purposes to visit our office at the Philip Goldson International Airport to discuss opportunities and plan a way forward.

For further information, call our offices at 225-2014 or 225-2052.

Also note that without permission, certain areas in Belize including Belize City and San Pedro Town are officially no-fly zones due to aerial activity at the Municipal and International Airports.
