By Aaron Humes: Police officer Wayne Allen Dawson, 36, of Belize City, is in a ton of trouble with the Department after two hit and run accidents and a shooting at a checkpoint.

We understand Dawson was involved in an accident in Corozal Town on Thursday afternoon, but he refused to cooperate and assist the lady with whom he collided and fled south toward Orange Walk Town.

According to an official police report, a Mobile Interdiction Team spotted Dawson grey JAC vehicle with license plates Bz-C-40829 around 4:45 in the area of San Jose village, Orange Walk but he refused to heed their order to stop and continued toward the Sugar City.

Police pursued and alerted a colleague, officer Thaddeus McKenzie of Corozal Police who was headed the other way in a marked Ford F-150 van at Mile 60 and 61, known as the Mameyal Curve.

But he too was unable to stop his colleague, if only for more than a brief moment as the pursuing officers got out of their vehicles. Dawson speeded off again and for good measure hit McKenzie’s vehicle at high speed to the right front portion.

The chase resumed and on entering Orange Walk Town in front of Luda’s Supermarket on Otro Benque Road, they finally managed to intercept the vehicle – but the drama wasn’t over yet.

Approaching officers were fired on when they ordered Dawson to step out, the officer drawing his Department-issued 9-millimeter firearm and firing three shots at the approaching officers. No one was hit.

The officers returned fire twice and managed to hit Dawson in his left upper back, then transported him to the nearby Northern Regional Hospital.

Police have retrieved Dawson’s weapon and impounded his vehicle at the Orange Walk Town Police Station as investigations continue. There is no word as to whether he will be tested for drug and alcohol use as well as other circumstances leading to the incident.
