By Aaron Humes: Former Premier League of Belize (PLB) champions and national representatives to the CONCACAF League and Champions League, Bandits Sports, are refusing to participate in the new Top League sponsored by the Football Federation of Belize (FFB).
In a statement, the club, also known as Belmopan Bandits, says it refused to sign a participation agreement created by the Federation for several reasons.
First, the current Premier League executive headed by Clifford King is not recognized by the Federation and the matter is before the courts.
Second, only five of the nine established PLB clubs including Bandits were invited, and no indication was provided of whether this League is recognized by CONCACAF or of the regulations guiding the tournament was made.
Third, Bandits allege that the Federation has improperly diverted FIFA funds to the creation of this league rather than the PLB.
Fourth, the club says it has been refused access to FIFA’s club registration portal to be properly licensed.
And fifth, Bandits has written to CONCACAF and FIFA to intervene in the dispute.
No football has been played in Belize since March of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Verdes are defending national champions.
