Cuba thanks Belize for $200,000 donation

Posted: Sunday, October 17, 2021. 12:03 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Cuba thanked the government and people of Belize for the donation shipment, a sign of excellent ties of friendship and solidarity that bind our sister countries,” said the Cuban Foreign Ministry on its official Twitter account on Saturday. The Belize statement on the donation was posted alongside the Cuban appreciation tweet.

The Government of Belize announced on Friday that it was sending the first of two humanitarian donations which included food supplies, sanitation, and assorted hygiene products valued at BZ$200,000 on Saturday.

“The Government of Belize is sending the first of two humanitarian donations to Cuba in solidarity with the nation’s government and people,” said a statement by the Government of Belize Press Office on Friday. The statement didn’t say when the second shipment would be sent nor its value.

Belize and Cuba have had a history of collaboration dating back 26 years, so the donation can be seen as returning a favor to Cuba who has helped Belize with a medical brigade in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Cuba faces both the COVID-19 pandemic and a strengthened embargo, which affected tourism revenue as well as the ability to source supplies for their population of 11.33 million,” said the Press Office.

The statement goes on to say that despite the challenges imposed by the embargo, Cuba has been able to make four vaccines which it has shared with several countries, it also recognizes Cuba for being one of the first country to inoculate children.

“At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Belize was one of the first countries to be aided by Cuba’s Henry Reeve Brigade,” said the Press Office.

According to Cuban news agency Prensa Latina, the Cuban Henry Reeve Brigade is deployed in more than 40 countries during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The statement also said that “Belize recognizes the exceptional efforts of Cuba over the last 60 years in consistently providing medical and technical assistance in times of global public health emergencies, such as the Ebola epidemic, and now, the COVID-19 pandemic”.

Cuba assisted West Africa during the Ebola pandemic.

“Belize and Cuba share 26 years of diplomatic relations founded on deep respect and admiration for the significant role Cuba has played in the region and globally,” closed the Press Office statement.
