By BBN Staff: Over the weekend it was widely reported that a well-known, infamous police officer who is also the son of a Minister of State was charged in connection with the shooting death of 25-year-old Jovani Augustine; however, the Belize Police Department said today that those reports are baseless.

Speaking with the media this morning, Communications Director for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Fitzroy Yearwood said that, thus far, only one person, 27-year old Belize City resident Kareem Beeks, has been charged in connection with Augustine’s murder.

“We have no proof of anybody else being charged in connection with that murder in particular, and it is a fact that Mr. Beeks was charged, so we can only report on the facts, ” Yearwood said.

Yearwood said that he would not go into further details on the issue to keep from divulging any evidence that investigators may have gathered on the incident. He stressed that once an official charge had been made, the department will report it.

Meanwhile, the information has been widely circulated that the officer allegedly involved, by his own claims, went as far as assisting police in retrieving the firearm used in the commission of the crime.

Augustine was shot while preparing to attend a funeral on Saturday, and died of his injures while undergoing treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
