By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Japanese scientists have produced a vaccine effective in preventing five different types of coronaviruses, including COVID-19, and which may be able to prevent pandemics.

According to the study, published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Japanese scientists have experimented in lab mice vaccinating them against severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-related) coronaviruses.

“Given that prior coronavirus epidemics such as SARS-CoV-1 and MERS-CoV have occurred due to zoonotic coronaviruses crossing the species barrier, the potential for the emergence of similar viruses in the future poses a significant threat to global public health, even in the face of effective vaccines for current viruses,” said lead researcher Professor Tomohiro Kurosaki from Osaka University.

Health officials have expressed great concern with viruses jumping from animals to humans as in the cases of bird flu, swine flu, Ebola, and MERS.

The developers said the vaccine can recognize different strains of coronaviruses and are hopeful that it can stop future strains that might develop in the future.

The research team is looking to now conduct the study in humans in the hopes of developing a next-generation vaccine that would prevent future pandemics.
