By Aaron Humes: According to the Opposition United Democratic Party, there is an implication in Cabinet’s statement of last week that it has approved a review of the fees in the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Order of 2003 that there will be increases in license and permit fees, i.e., taxes.
And the Opposition “vehemently opposes any increase in taxes on Belizeans in any sector at this time,” according to an official statement, because of the already heavy burdens on the economy – COVID-19 and the resultant recession which has only recently began to improve; still high unemployment and cuts in salaries in the public sector and high cost of fuel.
The Government should seek to instead restore the salaries of public officers and teachers, lifting the minimum wage to five dollars, reducing fuel taxes and developing an equitable social assistance distribution program, the Opposition recommends, all of which were addressed in its #planbelize program.
