By Aaron Humes: An investigation is to determine whether a cook of the Stann Creek District died as a result of COVID-19 or from injuries sustained in a fight.
25-year-old Anacleto Villanueva of Santa Rosa village, according to police, was involved in a fight that occurred overnight between October 8 and 9 in San Roman, and was left for dead along the roadside in some bushes where he was found the following morning by family members.
They took him to the Southern Regional Hospital in Dangriga Town and subsequently he was transferred by ambulance to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) in Belize City for treatment and medico-legal forms were issued.
Police say Villanueva was released from the Karl Heusner on October 15 and returned home.
But at home he began experiencing breathing difficulty and was taken back to the Southern Regional Hospital, where he died on October 19 in the afternoon. He was subsequently tested for COVID-19 and found to be positive and died in the ward around 3:40 in the afternoon.
But a post-mortem examination will be needed to conclusively say whether COVID-19 or his injuries in the fight killed him. That examination has been scheduled. Police investigations continue.
