Belize loses to Guatemala 1-3, falls to 1-3 record at Central American Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Women’s National Volleyball Team today won the first set against Guatemala in their fourth game of the XXI Central American Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship in Managua, Nicaragua, but then dropped the next three.

Guatemala won 18-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-20, totaling 93 points to 85.

Captain Nelissa Ramirez scored 18 points for Belize while Sherika Burton added 17.

Guatemala was led by Rut Beatriz Gómez who totaled 21 points.

The Guatemalans won the game with their attack (53-42) and service (11-5). Belize was better in blocking even if by only one point (6-5) and in errors, committing eight less than the Guatemalans (24-32).

The loss drops Belize to a 1-3 record, keeps the team in the 5th position of the seven-team tournament, but knocks us out of medal contention.

So far, our team, which went into the competition as sub-champions, won 3-2 over Honduras, but fell 0-3 to Costa Rica, 2-3 to Honduras and 1-3 to Guatemala.

Hosts Nicaragua and Costa Rica lead the competition with a 3-0 record. El Salvador is 3rd with 3-1 and Guatemala 4th with a 3-2. Panama is 0-3 and Honduras 0-4.

The other games today pit Panama against Honduras and Nicaragua against Costa Rica.

Belize’s next match will be against Nicaragua on Friday at 7:00 pm. Our team will close against Panama on Saturday at 4:00 pm.
