Evangelical churches warn against legalization of marijuana

By Aaron Humes: “Noh legalize it!” says the National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB), referring to marijuana.

After failing to get the ear of the Cabinet and especially Minister of New Growth Industries Kareem Musa on the issue, the Association has taken its lonely campaign to the press.

Even with Government involvement, allowing legal use and growth of cannabis gives an opening to the drug cartels, the churchmen say, citing statistics that say that 91 politicians and many judges in neighboring Mexico have been murdered for standing up to the drug cartels.

Without detail, NEAB says legalization would have “horrendous” indications for youth, business, tourism, and even banking relations and insist there are other ways to prosper with good fruit.

It may still take some convincing – or even an “act of God” – to sway Belmopan, however.

Use of up to ten grams of marijuana is no longer a criminal act; however, it remains illegal to grow or cultivate marijuana, or sell or traffick amounts above ten grams.
