U17 Belize Women’s National Football Team plays a must-win match against Barbados today in 2021 CWU17 Qualifying

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The U17 Belize Women’s National Football Team has to win this morning against Barbados to stay alive in the 2021 Concacaf Women’s U17 Qualifying tournament (CWU17).

The U17 Belize Women’s National Football Team (U17 BWNT) fell 3-1 to Curaçao in the first game of the 2021 CWU17 Qualifying tournament in Bradenton, Florida, on Wednesday.

Khalydia Velasquez scored Belize’s only goal in a mad scramble in front of the goal in the 54th minute. At the time our team was down 2-0. They conceded a late goal which closed the game at 3-1.

“The mentality right now is to go out there, play our game, believe in ourselves, be confident and do what we’ve been working on all this month at home,” said National team Coach Iris Centeno.

“We know that girls are capable of winning, we know they have the skills, they have the heart.

“They are going out they to give their best and I know that they can win,” Centeno said.

The U17 BWNT has to win the game and then wait for the final match between Curaçao and Barbados to play on Sunday to find out what position they finish off in the group. A draw or loss will definitely put Belize out of contention since only the group winners and the best-ranked 2nd place team to the 2022 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Championship (CWU17).

CONCACAF said the best second-place team will be determined using a weighted points system (total number of points divided by the number of matches played).

The groups are comprised in the following manner:

Group A: Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dominica, US Virgin Islands, and Suriname
Group B: Barbados, Curaçao and Belize
Group C: Honduras, Anguilla, Guyana, and Turks and Caicos Islands

The 2022 CWU17 is scheduled to take place in January. The top-ranked 16 teams participating in the Group Stage of the Championship will be divided into four groups. After round-robin play, the top three teams in each group will advance to the Round of 16, joining the four teams from the Qualifiers.

The top three teams from the 2022 CWU17 will qualify for the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup which is scheduled to be played in India between October 11-30, 2022.
