By Ruben Morales Iglesias: Costa Rica won the XXI Central American Senior Women’s Volleyball Championship in Managua, Nicaragua, while Belize finished the tournament in 6th position. The regional championship was not what the Belize National Team that went in as sub-champions expected, recording a dismal 1-5 record.
On Saturday, Belize lost its fifth game falling 2-3 in an extremely competitive game to Panama 25-18, 15-25, 26-24, 17-25, 13-15. Both teams went into their final game showing a negative 1-4 record with the Panamanians scoring a come-from-behind victory after losing the first set.
Sherika Burton led the Belize attack with 23 points while captain Nelissa Ramírez totaled 18.
Hashlyn Cuero led Panama with19 points.
Costa Rica won the championship with a 6-0 record followed by Nicaragua (5-1) and El Salvador (4-2). Guatemala with 3-3 finished 4th, followed by Panama (2-4-), Belize (1-5), and Honduras (0-6).
Panama dominated in attack 60-46, blocking 9-7 and service 11-5, gaining 27 points from Belize’s errors while committing 38, according to AFECAVOL, the sports regional governing body.
In Saturday’s other games, Costa Rica beat Panama 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-8) while Nicaragua defeated El Salvador 3-0 (25-9, 25-23, 25-10).
