Leader of Opposition Patrick Faber calls on Prime Minister to apologize for insensitive joke about ADHD

By BBN Staff: Leader of Opposition Patrick Faber today called on Prime Minister John Briceño to apologize for “an insensitive attack” against him in the House of Representatives on Tuesday, October 26.

“I know you suffer from ADHD but at least try to stay focus, noh man,” the Prime Minister reportedly told Faber at the House in Belmopan.

“While Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder may be a condition the Prime Minister thinks is funny, millions of people around the world, both children and adults, are affected by this neurodevelopmental disorder,” Faber said on social media.

Faber said that “in a continued attempt to be recognized as state jester” Briceño launched the insensitive attack during ADHD Awareness Month.

“The month of October is ADHD Awareness Month and the Prime Minister should use his time in the honourable House to push policies his party promised for the advancement of mental health care, not to ridicule a neurodevelopmental disorder,” added Faber.

According to the United States Mayo Clinic, “Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic condition that affects millions of children and often continues into adulthood. ADHD includes a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty sustaining attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior.”

“Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health disorder that includes a combination of persistent problems, such as difficulty paying attention, hyperactivity and impulsive behavior. Adult ADHD can lead to unstable relationships, poor work or school performance, low self-esteem, and other problems.”

The Leader of the Opposition also called on the Prime Minister’s wife who is the Special Envoy for the Development of Families and Children and the Speaker of the House of Representatives to take action.

“We call on the Special Envoy to condemn such tasteless attempt at humour and to have a sensitivity talk with her husband the Prime Minister. We also call on the Speaker of the House, Hon. Valerie Woods, to demand an apology from Prime Minister Briceno on behalf of all Belizeans dealing with neurodevelopmental disorders.

“We call on all stakeholders to help in ‘Reframing ADHD and Discovering New Perspectives,'” said Faber in his post.
