National Fire Service says that Yarborough fire was maliciously set

Posted: Wednesday, October 27, 2021. 2:53 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: There was a fire in the Yarborough (Yabra) area of Belize City yesterday, and the Belize National Fire Service has determined that it was deliberately set.

Officer in Charge of the NFS Belize District branch Kenneth Mortis explained that fire personnel received the call just before 5:30 p.m. and when they responded found an elevated wooden building engulfed in flames.

Mortis said that fire personnel managed to extinguish the blaze before the building was completely destroyed, so the structure is still standing although heavily damaged. He noted that the fire started on the southeast corner of the house, leading authorities to believe it was maliciously set.

“The location where we noticed this fire started from was at the rear, out of the view of the closest neighbor. That gave the perpetrator/s enough time to create their mischief and abandon the scene without being noticed,” Mortis said.

He stressed that with over 20 years of experience in fire fighting, in his professional opinion it would be more believable that the fire was an accident if it had occurred inside the building; however, the origin point of the fire implies malicious intent.
