By Aaron Humes: Riviera Maya News reports that members of a “criminal gang” are feared to have crossed the Belize-Mexico border from La Union, Quintana Roo, on Friday night after an exchange of gunfire with Mexican soldiers.
While on patrol, soldiers encountered a convoy of vehicles on the road. The men refused orders to stop, opened fire, and sped away. The officers returned fire but were unable to locate and apprehend the group.
It is believed the men ditched their vehicles and fled into the jungle toward Belize. Mexican authorities were able to seize the vehicles and firearms that were left behind.
It is not clear whether the group was moving contraband, drugs, or other illicit material.
