Belizean Ana Lopez wins Pumpkin Run 10k in Athens, West Virginia

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean Ana Lopez added one more trophy to her collection winning the Pumpkin Run 10k in Athens, West Virginia, on Saturday, October 30, 2021, according to the Bluefield Daily Telegraph.

Lopez, who is well-known in running and canoeing circles in Belize, clocked 44 minutes and 51 seconds; 35 seconds ahead of second-place Tyler Huffman (45:26) and 42 seconds ahead of third-place Todd Matson (45:33) in the race that was open to both men and women.

Lopez, according to the Daily Telegraph, was impressed with the autumn foliage at the Pipestem Resort State Park where she won the 10-kilometer division in the 45th annual Pumpkin Run.

“Oh, it’s beautiful,” Lopez said to the Daily Telegraph. “Well, the hills were challenging, but it’s beautiful. The fog, the leaves, everything is beautiful — even the people here.”

“At the start, I was almost at the last. … I got to where I caught the guy in second place, then I kept going and going ‘til I got to the guy that was in the front. Then, on the way back, that was where I said I’ve got to get more pace — more speed,” Lopez said

The race also featured 5K runs and walks in men’s and women’s categories.
