Embassy of Belize in Taiwan, ABV Restaurant launch Belize Cuisine Month in Taipei

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Taiwan’s ABV Caribbean Restaurant in collaboration with the Belize Embassy in Taiwan launched its Belize Cuisine Month titled: A Wondrous Place, a Wondrous Plate,” on Monday, November 1, at noon during a press conference.

The Belize Embassy said that in collaboration with Camilo Chang—CEO and owner of ABV Restaurant, it hosted a press conference “to kick off the Belize Cuisine Month at ABV Restaurant”.

Ambassador Dr. Candice Pitts said this collaboration with ABV is “to deploy food as an instrument to help create cross-cultural understanding, deepen the exposure of Belize to Taiwanese, improve interactions and cooperations, help strengthen the bilateral relationship between Belize and Taiwan, and of course, win hearts and minds through the stomach”.

Ambassador Pitts and Taiwan’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexander Yui, did a brief demonstration on how to cook hudut—a dish which Ambassador Pitts explained is distinct to the Garifuna ethnic group in Belize. She said that, as an ambassador unto itself, “the Belizean cuisine will introduce the customers of ABV and Taiwan in general to the colorfulness and depth of the Belizean cultures”.

Every day during November, the ABV Restaurant in Taipei will feature a variety of Belizean dishes.

On November 19, the Embassy of Belize will commemorate Garifuna Settlement Day, and ABV will Garifuna dishes including Hudut and Cassava Pudding.

Every Friday in November will be Belize Lobster Fest Friday. ABV Caribbean will have special dishes made with lobster imported from Belize.

Belizean music and other cultural and educational artifacts will also be on display for the entire month. ABV will offer discounts on meals for customers who know fun facts about Belize and for Belizeans who present a valid identification card. Additionally, students with a valid student ID also qualify for discounts on all meals.

The Belize Embassy said many media houses, as well as bloggers and writers, attended the press conference, which should provide both ABV Restaurant and Belize publicity.

The Embassy of Belize said it thanks all those who attended the event, in particular the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alexander Yui, “for helping our Ambassador to cook hudut”, as well as the Director-General of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs in the Taiwan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Florencia Hsie and the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Taiwan, Ambassador Jasmine Huggins.

The Embassy further thanked “Augusto Liao, Elaine, and the staff at CATO; Camilo Chen and the chefs at ABV Restaurant; and especially our student Melody Wagner for sharing her knowledge of Belizean cuisines. We thank all the other students and everyone else who assisted to make this event successful”.
