Court spares man for being out on a “No Movement Sunday” to go see his child

Posted: Tuesday, November 2, 2021. 7:56 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: The Government of Belize had recently designated two Sundays designated as “No Movement Days” under COVID-19 prevention legislation. Police found 52-year-old Elias Domingo out of his house on one of those days and he was taken to court today to answer for that charge.

Domingo appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court and was read a single charge of failure to provide valid reasons for movement.

In court, he explained that when the officers found him on Cemetery Road on Sunday, October 3, he was on his way to go see his child. He told the court that he has visitation rights and that day was the only day he had available to make the visit. He further furnished the court with a custody letter to prove his plight.

Taking his defense into consideration, the Magistrate told him he would not receive a sentence and that he was free to leave.

Any SOE fine presently is $500. At the commencement of the pandemic, such an offense carried a mandatory fine of $5,000.00.
