Man charged with stealing gas tank worth $115 can’t meet $1,500 bail, remanded to prison

By BBN Staff: Forty-three-year-old Belize City resident, Richard Ferguson, was remanded to jail this week in connection with an allegation that he stole a gas tank along with its hose and regulator which had a total value of $115.

Ferguson appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court, attempting to plead guilty with the explanation that he is the cousin of the complainant and that the accusation being made against him is fabricated.

When asked why he wanted to take the rap for a crime he did not commit, Ferguson told the court that he had been out of work for some time and finally landed a job, which he wishes to keep. He said that he hoped to plead guilty and get off with a fine so he could return to work; however, he was told that a fine is unlikely in his case because he has an extensive rap sheet for crimes of dishonesty.

Chief Magistrate Sharon Fraser offered Ferguson bail in the sum of $1,500, but he was unable to meet his bail and was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until December 29, 2021.
