By BBN Staff: Seven police officers were among a group of 20 people found to be breaking COVID-19 regulations at Lerisi Garifunaduau Restaurant in Belize City on Saturday.
When police approached the group, around 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 30, the officers showed no respect for their fellow on-duty counterparts. Officers from Precinct 3 had to be deployed to the restaurant, located on Marine Parade, to neutralize the situation.
On Monday, Director of Communications for the Office of the Commissioner of Police, Assistant Superintendent Fitzroy Yearwood, strongly condemned the officers’ behavior and said that the matter is already being looked at by the Professional Standards Branch.
“And their findings will be made public because we want to send a strong message to the general public that this is not the way the police department operates,” Yearwood said.
Yearwood also said that the supervising officer tasked with dealing with the situation is in danger of disciplinary action as well, because the officers should have promptly received tickets for COVID-19 regulation violations; however, this was not done.
“We cannot neglect our duty and try to blame as using discretionary powers. The fact remains that the officers violated the COVID Act and they must be dealt with,” Yearwood added.
