By Rubén Morales Iglesias: San Pedro, Ambergris Caye is mourning the death of BEL employee Elder Alvarez.

Alvarez, who died on Monday, was the ‘Light of the island,’ said the San Pedro Sun. He worked for over 30 years for Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) and was the man who would take care of Ambergris Caye’s electricity ‘business’ in times of natural disasters or technical issues.

“It is with profound sadness that the Alvarez and Belize Electricity Limited families announce the passing of Elder Alvarez,” said BEL. “Today, we mourn his loss and celebrate his life, his work, and his many contributions to BEL and his community.”

Mayor Gualberto “Wally” Nunez and the San Pedro Town Councillors expressed their condolences to the Alvarez family “on the untimely passing of a loving father, brother, uncle and friend Elder Alvarez”.

“Elder Alvarez was an essential part of the island as he served San Pedro as a linesman lead-hand at BEL (Belize Electricity Limited) for over three decades,” said the San Pedro Town Council.

Blue Economy Minister and area representative Andre Perez also expressed condolences to “the Alvarez/Guerrero family and friends with thoughts of comfort in helping them get over the immense void left behind by the loss of Elder Alvarez”.
