Beware of WhatsApp scam says Digi

Posted: Wednesday, November 3, 2021. 3:45 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL), doing business as Digi, has informed customers of attempts to scam them using the instant messaging app WhatsApp, owned by Facebook.

The scammers, it says, attempt to engage the victim by sending a code via short messaging service (SMS) and phone call.

When you repeat the code to the scammer, they are able to sign into your WhatsApp account from another device and lock you out. They then repeat the trick with other members in your contact list and those who fall victim are also locked out of their accounts.

The company statement says, “Digi urges all mobile customers to remain vigilant and disregard any request to share their WhatsApp 6-digit verification code and to enable Two-step verification.”
