By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Our Community joins with the Government and People of Dominica in celebrating this Forty-Third Anniversary of Independence and offers best wishes for the continued advancement and growth of the Commonwealth of Dominica” said Dr. Carla Barnett, Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), in her message to Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
Dominica became independent of the United Kingdom on November 3, 1978.
“The theme of this year’s Independence festivities, ‘United in Purpose: Our Health, Our Heritage, Our Culture’ is a clear rallying cry for Dominicans in this challenging period to continue in their collective actions to combat their challenges and maintain their unique identity,” said the Secretary-General.
Barnett told Skerrit that his important portfolio within the CARICOM Quasi-Cabinet as lead Head of Government for Labour (including intra-community movement of skills) is a significant responsibility in CARICOM’S integration movement.
She added that CARICOM anticipates that Dominica will continue working towards the Community’s integration process.
