Belize Energy Unit observes November as Energy Month

Posted: Thursday, November 4, 2021. 12:15 pm CST.

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belize Energy Unit in the Ministry of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics is observing November as Energy Month under the Caribbean Community‘s (CARICOM) theme: From Dependence to Resilience: Fuelling our recovery with Sustainable Energy.

“The month-long focus on energy is intended to increase awareness on the importance and opportunities of a more sustainable energy and climate-resilient future for all,” said a Belize Energy Unit press release.

“This includes the general recognition of the role of energy services for all citizens, businesses and stakeholders in Belize and to encourage more thoughtful and effective utilization of energy resources for more sustainable outcomes.”

“We continue to focus on renewal energy-clean production, energy efficiency, infrastructure and governance of the energy sector,” said Rodwell Ferguson, Minister of Minister of Public Utilities, Energy and Logistics.

“This serves the ultimate goal of transitioning our energy sector from the traditional dependence on fossil fuels to a robust and resilient energy sector.

“Belize currently has the largest composition of renewal energy sources for its electricity mix within the Caribbean region,” Ferguson added.

Ferguson said that after the pilot solar project in La Gracia in Cayo in 2017, seven more villages will set up smart solar energy microgrids during 2021, as part of sustainable and resilient alternative solutions to energy access in Belize.

The Energy Unit is this month also announcing the winners of the Energy Digital Art competition. Felicia Friesen from Cayo won 1st place, Chao-Ken Cheng from Belmopan second, and Chelsea Hall from Corozal 3rd place.

The Belize Energy Month 2021 will also have participation in the Belize Investment Summit on November 10 and 11.

The 2020 Annual Energy Report will also be presented this month.

Additionally, the Belize Energy Unit is organizing Energy & You Tuesdays, a virtual show which is being presented on every Tuesday during November.
