Belizean farmers receive breeding sheep from the Breeding Sheep and Goat Project

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belizean farmers today received breeding sheep from the Breeding Sheep and Goat Production and Guidance System Enhancement Project (BSGP-GSEP).

The BSGP-GSEP) is a collaborative program between the Governments of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and Belize.

Present for the Handing over Ceremony were José Abelardo Mai, Minister of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise, and H.E. David Kuan-Chou Chien, Ambassador of Taiwan.

A MAFSE release said the initiative came from the “Food For The Poor (FFTP), a non-profit Christian organization, that has partnered with the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (Taiwan ICDF), to acquire and donate high-quality breeding sheep stock for families in the Cayo District”.

The FFTP funded the program and selected the beneficiaries while the Taiwan ICDF is providing technical advice during the program’s implementation.

The objective of the program is for families “to become more self-reliant and over time become proficient in sheep rearing to develop their enterprises into a small business”.

The MAFSE statement said 20 families recently received 85 breeding sheep, which included breeds such as Barbados Blackbelly, Dorper, and Katahdin. As added support to ensure they know how to care for the sheep, the families will also receive technical visits and best practice and financial literacy workshops.

The Ministry of Agriculture said that for more families to benefit from sheep breeding they were able to manage a decrease in the price of breeding sheep.

MAFSE, the FFTP, and Taiwan said they will assist the receiving families to ensure they reach a self-sustainable level. Furthermore, the Taiwan Embassy said it would continue supporting the Government of Belize through the Sheep and Goat Project.
