By BBN Staff: Two police officers have been detained in southern Belize, pending charges for firearms offenses.
Police report that they detained the officers following a high-speed chase en route from Punta Gorda Town to Independence Village.
Independence Police were informed of two suspicious vehicles in the area and performed checks which prompted the chase as the vehicles sped off when they arrived. Police intercepted the fleeing vehicles only minutes apart between San Juan and Red Bank Village in the Stann Creek district. One vehicle had three men inside while the other had two male police officers, a woman, and a baby girl inside.
During a search of the vehicles, police found a camouflage bulletproof vest with five black magazines loaded with 139 live .223 rounds of ammunition, a .9mm Glock pistol with an extended clip containing 30 live rounds, and another magazine containing 15 .9mm rounds. The officers also recovered a police body camera, a pair of binoculars, and a mobile radio, as well as a small coffee bottle with a small amount of suspected cannabis inside.
The department says that the officers will be charged with “kept ammunition without a gun license.”
