Newly appointed Cuban Ambassador pays courtesy visit to Minister of Education

By Benjamin Flowers: This week, newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Belize, Her Excellency María Caridad Balaguer Labrada, for a courtesy call to Minister of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology (MOECST), Francis Fonseca at the Ministry’s Headquarters in the City of Belmopan.

According to the Ministry, the Cuban Ambassador met with the Minister on Monday, where Fonseca took the opportunity to thank the Ambassador for her country’s unwavering commitment to Belize’s national development especially in the areas of education, health, and culture.

“Cuba has remained a strong friend of Belize despite the ongoing trials of the pandemic and the illegal and unilateral embargo imposed upon their nation. The Ambassador, in turn, highlighted Belize’s steadfast support for Cuba and reaffirmed our common will to continue strengthening bilateral cooperation,” the MOESCT said.

The ministry also noted that Belize and Cuba celebrated 26 years of bilateral relations, solidarity, and cooperation this year.

Through an education cooperation agreement, more than 200 Belizean students have gone to study in Cuba, over those years.

Both countries are looking forward to continued collaboration. Ambassador Labrada officially handed over her credentials to Governor-General of Belize H.E. Froyla Tzalam on Monday, October 18. She succeeds Ambassador Lissette Perez Perez.
