Prime Minister, Police Commissioner tout ‘boost in public confidence’ with drug plane arrests

Posted: Tuesday, November 9, 2021. 3:51 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: In his first public comments on last week’s drug plane bust in northern Toledo, Prime Minister John Briceño focused on the effort to restore public confidence and stamp out crime.

He told Channel 5 News that “we are going to bring in every help we can get to be able to arrest these people… You can’t win trust overnight. We have to be able to win back that trust that was destroyed by the previous governments.”

And he suggested that such a bust and series of arrests had never been made before – but the previous incident in that area in 2012 and subsequent incidents in the North put paid to that.

And the Commissioner of Police echoed those sentiments, telling reporters in a press briefing that now those past rumblings about police involvement in these activities appear to be proven true in this case, police should not be slated for making sure they are caught this time.

Chester Williams asked rhetorically, “But now, we are catching them and now we are supposed to pay the price for catching them? Or should it be that we just left them to roam and commit these crimes with impunity? I think the fact that we are at that stage now where they have been caught and exposed, should be commended, and not what is currently being done. And this is what I would like the Belizean people to see. The [number] of officers that we have disciplined and dismissed over the past few months is unprecedented. It shows that we are cleaning the house and make sure that we hold our officers accountable…”
