By Aaron Humes: As the 26th Conference of the Parties draws to a close, new projections show the world is heading toward at least 2.4˚C of warming.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Chief Climate Advisor, Dr Stephen Cornelius said in response that humanity faces limited time to address the issue: “This analysis is another shot across the bow, another red alert for humanity. Time is running out. Leaders must listen to the people on the streets calling for action not words, and commit in Glasgow to drastically increase the ambition of their climate action plans and deliver credible action, powerful policies, and ambitious funding now.”

Dr Cornelius said the 2030 country targets are well off track of the 1.5 ℃ limit previously agreed to under the Paris Accord and risk “even more catastrophic impacts on people and wildlife.”

According to the Guardian (UK), optimistic forecasts published last week that suggested heating could be held to 1.9C or 1.8C, thanks to commitments announced at the talks, now in their second week and scheduled to end this weekend.

By contrast, the sobering assessment of a rise of 2.4C from Climate Action Tracker (CAT), the world’s most respected climate analysis coalition, was based on countries’ short-term goals for the next decade.
