By BBN Staff: An elderly man was taken before the Belize Magistrate’s Cout this week charged with breaching curfew under the current COVID-19 prevention regulations.

Sixty-four-year-old Gilbert Williams was charged with leaving his home on Pigeon Street at 9:39 p.m. on October 8.

In court, Williams pleaded guilty to the charge but explained that he had just gotten a call from his sister that their 93-year-old mother had suffered a fall. Williams said he immediately left his home to go assist and walked right into police who then charged him, despite him explaining that it was an emergency situation.

Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson rejected Williams’s guilty plea and entered an equivocal plea of not guilty, and granted him bail in the sum of $500.00. The case will have to go to trial.
