By Aaron Humes: Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Immigration Eamon Courtenay has told his colleagues in the Organization of American States (OAS) that the region’s democracies must be supported against the increasing challenges they face.
In his statement at the fifty-first regular session of the OAS’ general assembly, Courtenay called for the OAS to focus its attention on holistically supporting healthy and vibrant democracies.
The Minister’s remarks touched on COVID-19 and condemned the continued vaccine hoarding and inequitable distribution of vaccines by some OAS member states. He reaffirmed the enduring obligation of cooperative action and act on it in the name of vaccine justice.
Further, Courtenay underscored the importance of adhering to the Charter of the OAS to promote and consolidate representative democracy, with due respect for the principle of non-intervention, and challenged the OAS to catalyse hemispheric solutions to the challenges which the region faces including migration and climate change.
The meeting concludes on Friday.
The OAS continues to support relations between Belize and Guatemala in its office on the border line.
